Texas paid bitcoin miner Riot $31.7 million to shut down during heat wave in August

Bitcoin miner Riot Platforms raked in $31.7 million in energy credits from Texas power grid operator ERCOT in August.

Bitcoin miners get paid YOUR money to stop using electricity during emergencies. In August 2022, Riot collected $31.7 million from ERCOT - money that ultimately comes from Texas ratepayers through system fees.
Even if this doesn't show up as a direct charge on your bill, you're subsidizing an industry that:
  • Profits more from NOT operating during crises than from actually mining
  • Requires expensive grid upgrades that ALL ratepayers help fund
  • Consumes massive power that could serve 45,000 homes
  • Gets paid to 'help' solve a problem they helped create
Whether through system administration fees, transmission charges, or infrastructure costs, Texas ratepayers ARE paying for bitcoin mining - just not transparently.
